Carbon Monoxide
There’s nothing quite like the freedom of van life—the late nights, the open spaces, and finally, the comfort your heating system provides on those frosty nights. But in a space as small as a Caravan, motorhome or your DIY converted van, the line between a cozy night’s sleep and a life-threatening situation is thinner than you might think.
Carbon monoxide (CO) is often called the “silent killer” because it has no smell, no taste, and no warning signs. It is especially important with DIY converted vans where diesel heaters are installed. These heaters are a brilliant way to stay off-grid but a single loose flue connection or a blocked ventilation point can turn your dream build into a danger zone. At DLC Servicing, we want you to enjoy every mile of your journey safely. In this post, we’re breaking down the critical DIY safety checks every van owner needs to know, from proper flue sealing to why that CO detector is the most important piece of gear you’ll ever buy
1. The Invisible Danger
Carbon Monoxide (CO) is tasteless, odourless, and colourless. In the small, airtight space of a caravan or motorhome, levels can become lethal in minutes.
2. The DIY Diesel Heater Risk
We are seeing an increase in Diesel heaters being installed in van conversions. It is critical these are installed correctly with Focus on the sealed flue and air intake positioning.
- The Flue: The exhaust must be sealed and vented entirely outside the vehicle. A tiny leak in the internal exhaust pipe can fill the living area with CO while you sleep.
- Mounting: Ensure the unit is mounted on a heat-resistant plate to prevent floor materials from scorching.
3. Ventilation is Non-Negotiable
Many make the mistake of “over-insulating” and blocking vents to stay warm.
- Fixed Ventilation: Floor vents and roof lights are designed to circulate air. Never cover them.
- Combustion Air: The heater needs fresh air to burn fuel properly; if it’s starved, it produces significantly more CO.
4. The Lifesaver: CO Detectors
- Correct Type: Use an audible alarm powered by a sealed-for-life lithium battery (certified to EN 50291).
- Placement: Mount it at head height when sleeping, but not directly next to the heater (to avoid false positives).
- Testing: Regularly press the “test” button before every trip.
5. Why Professional Servicing Matters
DIY is great for furniture, gas and heating systems should be checked by a professional (like DLC Servicing). An annual Gas Safety test or a heater inspection ensures everything is airtight and burning clean.
